The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has accused the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, of voting against "any progress for Spaniards", after the leader of the popular party announced that his formation will reject this Friday, in the Congress of Deputies, the two housing decrees approved this Tuesday by the Council of Ministers.
Feijóo questions the forced extension of contracts until 2028 included in one of the decrees and maintains that it contradicts the reform of the Urban Leases Law (LAU). However, this interpretation is rejected by the Government, which defends that both measures are compatible and will reinforce the protection of tenants. The PP, therefore, bases its rejection on a supposed incompatibility between both measures that the Executive denies.
Criticism from Ferraz of the PP's stance
The PSOE's Organization Secretary, Rebeca Torró, has reproached in a message on X that, regarding housing, the PP only offers "nothing, mockery, and fraud", and from Ferraz they have also criticized Feijóo for using "decency" as an argument to justify the popular vote.
"It seems that Génova only considers it decent to buy a 'penthouse' with the money of Madrid residents or to give away public housing to relatives", they added in a statement released by the party.
The PSOE defends measures for rent, purchase, and control of speculation
Against the position of Feijóo's party, the socialists have defended that rights come "before" "business", and have claimed that the decrees contain "concrete measures" to respond to the housing access crisis.
According to the PSOE, if the Government's proposal goes ahead, those who live in rented accommodation will have "more stability and protection", those who suffer from seasonal "fraud" will have new "guarantees", and those who want to buy their first home will have "more help", while those who intend to "speculate with a right" will encounter "more limits".
More construction and more regulation to shield public housing
From Ferraz they have also defended the need to promote more construction of affordable housing, but at the same time strengthen regulation to tackle the housing crisis, with the aim of preventing speculation from continuing to expel people from their neighborhoods.
In this framework, they have recalled that the two decrees open the door to the freezing of rental contracts for two more years, to deductions for tenants, to incentives for owners who lower rents, to limits on speculative purchases and to greater tax pressure on tourist apartments and socimi (Listed Real Estate Investment Companies).
The PSOE has also reiterated that these two norms will serve to shield public housing and guarantee that it is protected "permanently", by maintaining that "what is built with the effort of all cannot end up tomorrow converted into business for a few".
