The Secretary of Organization and spokesperson for the party, Pablo Fernández, has harshly criticized the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, for not having proceeded with the dismissal of the Director General of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González, after her recent indictment in the 'Leire case'. In a press conference, he described the situation as “pathetic” and assured that it is “absolutely regrettable” that the head of the Armed Institute has not presented her resignation.
The Podemos leader has linked this case with other judicial investigations affecting the PSOE's circle, such as the Koldo case, and has stated that there are different procedures that, in his opinion, demonstrate the need to assume political responsibilities. Likewise, he recalled the existence of other high-ranking officials involved in the 'Leire case', in addition to directors of the organization, which, he said, makes the situation “very serious” and “unsustainable”.
On the other hand, Fernández has assured that Podemos had no knowledge of the alleged irregular practices related to SEPI during the last coalition legislature with the PSOE, and has defended that his party was not aware of these facts at that time.
The Government backs Mercedes and conveys “Maximum tranquility”
The Executive has reaffirmed its support for the Director General of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González, after the judge of the Audiencia Nacional Santiago Pedraz cited her as an investigated party in the 'Leire case'. From Moncloa, they have conveyed a message of “maximum tranquility” and have defended that the head of the Armed Institute will offer the corresponding explanations before Justice.
The same decision is maintained regarding the deputy operational director of the corps, Lieutenant General Manuel Llamas, who has also been summoned to testify on July 16 for alleged crimes of prevarication and obstruction of justice. According to sources from the Ministry of Interior, both officials will continue in their functions. The Executive insists that the opening of proceedings does not imply changes in their position. In this regard, they emphasize that the Government's action is based on “normality” and “transparency”, under the premise that "there is nothing to hide".
