The Socialist Youth increase pressure on the PSOE and demand the expropriation of Maricarmen's apartment: "The system has failed her"

The Socialist Youth have increased pressure on the PSOE and the socialist wing of the Government after the eviction of Maricarmen. The Madrid federation demands the expropriation of the apartment where the 87-year-old woman had lived since 1956 and demands the halt of all evictions affecting vulnerable people or those without a housing alternative.

"The system has failed Mari Carmen and this injustice must end," denounced Socialist Youth of Madrid. The organization also points to the "inaction" of Isabel Díaz Ayuso's Government and demands an immediate response from the administrations. "We demand the halt of evictions of vulnerable people or those without a housing alternative and the expropriation of Mari Carmen's apartment," it stressed.

The statement is supported by a broader communiqué from Socialist Youth of Spain, which considers what happened a failure that affects society as a whole and the institutions responsible for guaranteeing the right to decent housing. Maricarmen has a recognized disability of 50% and remains hospitalized after being expelled on a stretcher from the house where she had spent more than seven decades.

The youth organization celebrates that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced the urgent processing of a new housing decree, but warns that deeper measures are needed. It also condemns the scenes witnessed during the police operation, which it describes as "totally inadmissible," and rejects the use of force against people who were peacefully trying to prevent the eviction.

Among its proposals is to convert housing into a fundamental right enshrined in Title I of the Constitution, to limit rental prices in stressed areas, expand the public housing stock, and prohibit evictions without a housing alternative. The Socialist Youth also propose preventing investment funds from buying homes, obliging large owners and rentiers to offer affordable rents, and tightening the regulation of tourist apartments.

Representatives of the organization have already conveyed these demands to the Housing Secretariat of the PSOE's Federal Executive Commission. As explained in the statement, the socialist leadership has collected their proposals and both parties have agreed to hold a joint sectoral meeting to continue working on a crisis that particularly affects young people and families with fewer resources.

The demand regarding Maricarmen's flat opens a direct discrepancy with the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes, Félix Bolaños. The socialist leader rejected this Friday expropriation formulas "that lead nowhere" and whose constitutional fit he considers unclear, while Sumar and the Socialist Youth demand to recover the housing and make it available again to its former tenant.

Urbagestión has now offered the Madrid City Council to incorporate the property into the Reviva program so that Maricarmen can return through an affordable rent. The City Council still has to respond and the representatives of the affected party assure that they have not received a formal proposal. The woman remains hospitalized while the different administrations and the owning company negotiate a solution after having allowed the eviction to be carried out.
