The Government has downplayed the new statements by US President Donald Trump, who this Wednesday, during the NATO summit in Ankara, described Spain as "a lost cause" and advocated breaking commercial relations with the country.
Sources from the Executive have assured that they face these statements with "calm and normality" and have recalled that the economic relationship between the United States and Spain develops within the framework of the European Union, so a commercial measure directed solely against a member state cannot be adopted.
From Moncloa they have also insisted that the bilateral relationship continues to be beneficial for both countries, both in the economic and defense spheres, and have stressed that the United States maintains a trade surplus with Spain. In addition, they have recalled that economic exchanges respond to the activity of private companies and not to government decisions.
