The terrible earthquakes that took place in Venezuela last night have resulted in the death of two Spanish citizens and 80 are missing. This has been reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and European Union, headed by Minister José Manuel Albares.

"Foreign Affairs reports that the number of Spaniards not located at this time is 80. We deeply regret the death of those Spaniards confirmed by their own relatives, to whom we extend our condolences," the Ministry reported. Likewise, they confirmed the death of a driver who was an employee of the Spanish Embassy in Caracas, along with his wife and daughters.

This Friday morning there are a total of 188 dead and 1,520 injured in Venezuela after two strong earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 that hit the Caribbean region of the country. The earthquakes also caused significant material damage, the magnitude of which is still being evaluated by the authorities.

Given the seriousness of the situation, leader Delcy Rodriguez has described La Guaira, north of Caracas, as a "catastrophic zone" and announced the declaration of a state of emergency. In this context, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, spoke this Thursday with the Venezuelan president to convey Spain's solidarity.

The Government has sent a plane with two urban search and rescue teams from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) and the Emergency and Immediate Response Team of the Community of Madrid (ERICAM). Personnel from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) will also travel to assess humanitarian needs on the ground.
