The toll of Spanish victims after the double earthquake that shook Venezuela last June 24 worsens. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, confirmed this Friday three deaths among compatriots residing in the country, where about 200,000 Spaniards live, and raised the number of missing to 99.
To these figures are added four Spaniards who have already been located, but remain trapped under the rubble. As the minister explained, rescue teams are now working to reach them.
The Government has also launched a repatriation operation. The same military plane that transported UME teams, rescuers from the Community of Madrid, and AECID personnel to Venezuela will serve to bring back to Spain a group of Spanish tourists who are stranded in the country, in addition to those "Spaniards in transit in Venezuela or those with special needs."
Albares pointed out that the Embassy, the Consulate in Caracas, and the Consular Emergency Unit continue to work on the search and assistance to affected Spaniards. In addition, he recalled that the consular emergency lines remain operational and asked unregistered citizens to contact the emergency numbers enabled: +34 910001249; +58 424 2090264; +58 212 6270300; and +58 212 6270314. For those who have been affected and are without accommodation, the Consulate recommends going to the "nearest Spanish center" in the case of Caracas, to the Hermandad Gallega or the Hogar Canario, where they must identify themselves with a passport or DNI.
On a humanitarian level, Albares reported that Spain has already mobilized one million euros through the International Red Cross to "address the most immediate needs of the sister people of Venezuela."
