“Mr. Vivas’s request is more than justified”, the Deputy Secretary of Education and Equality of the Popular Party, Jaime de los Santos, supported this Friday. With this declaration, the Popular Party of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, joins the requests of the president of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas.

The Ceutan requested the Government of Pedro Sánchez to suspend the right to asylum and to carry out the return of the migrant people who entered the territory between July 30 and 31, “as soon as possible.”

In this regard, De los Santos pointed out that an eventual suspension of the right to asylum in Spain would not be an unprecedented measure within the European Union. He also valued the refusal of the autonomous communities governed by his party to include a specific point in the next Sectoral Conference on Childhood and Adolescence to address the situation in Ceuta and the care of unaccompanied migrant minors.

In this context, De los Santos defended that the new European framework for migration and asylum also contemplates minors who arrive alone and considered that, in circumstances such as those experienced in Ceuta, their “immediate return would be perfectly justified.”

The popular deputy secretary also held the central Executive responsible for the situation generated in the autonomous city. In his opinion, what happened is due to the fact that the Government of Spain “was not capable” of anticipating the massive arrival or of adequately reinforcing the borders. For this reason, he maintained that the consequences of this crisis should not fall on the autonomous communities, to which he attributes a limited capacity to assume the arrival of more unaccompanied minors.
