This Friday it was announced that the Government has authorized the operation of the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant in Extremadura, at least until June 8, 2030, following the request in 2025 by the three owners of the plant, Iberdrola Endesa and Naturgy. This has caused some controversy, which is why the Popular Party wanted to comment on this issue.
Their message begins strongly, stating that, "this decision represents the recognition of the failure of their energy policy, whose consequences are paid by all Spaniards with the total blackout suffered by our country". They have also accused the Government of wanting to carry out this operation secretly: "The Government amends itself and wanted to do it surreptitiously, on a Friday, August 14, through a publication in the BOE and without public announcement by Minister Aagensen, the same one who has constantly and repeatedly opposed the PP's request to extend the life of Almaraz".
The Popular Party, in this statement, has also linked this issue to the EU: "This mini extension is just a patch to an ideologized management by Sánchez and, as in so many other fundamental issues, contrary to the countries of the European Union". The popular party has not stopped here, and has claimed their work on this matter: "From the PP, we have insisted with different initiatives in Congress and the Senate on the defense of nuclear energy and its coexistence with other energies, such as renewables. We presented a law to extend all power plants, it was debated in Congress and the PSOE has it paralyzed".
In addition, the PP has also communicated its demands to the Government: "We demand from the Government the urgent cancellation of the closure schedule, not only of the Almaraz plant, but of the rest of the nuclear power plants in Spain". To conclude their message, they wanted to show their favorable points about this move: "We welcome this rectification by the Government, also from a socioeconomic point of view, because more than 4,000 families in the Cáceres region depended on the Almaraz plant". "Furthermore, the extension of the useful life of the power plants is necessary to maintain electricity prices and not further ruin the pockets of Spaniards", they concluded.
