The femicidal murder of a 34-year-old woman in Barcelona has raised the number of fatalities in Spain to 32 during 2026. Seven of the crimes occurred in July, making it the deadliest month of the year after several particularly harsh weeks.
The woman was attacked this Tuesday in a home on Andrade Street, in Barcelona's Sant Martí district. Her children, aged four and eight, were in the home, although the investigation still needs to clarify if they witnessed the aggression. Emergency services tried to save her after receiving the alert at 7:47 PM, but the injuries proved fatal.
The alleged aggressor fled after the crime and the Mossos d'Esquadra arrested him early this Wednesday morning. The victim, of Brazilian nationality, was married to the arrested man and had never filed a complaint for gender violence against him.
Her murder leaves two new minors orphaned. There are now 22 during 2026 and 532 since they began to be counted in 2013. The overall balance reaches 1,373 women murdered by their partners or ex-partners since 2003.
Official data shows that 20 of the 32 victims this year had broken off the relationship or were in the process of separation. Another 17 still lived with their aggressor. The majority, 22 women, had no prior complaints. In ten cases, complaints were on record, and eight victims had requested protection measures.
The Ministry of Equality has expressed its "most emphatic condemnation" of the crime. Minister Ana Redondo and the Government Delegate against Gender Violence, Carmen Martínez Perza, have conveyed their support to the family and called for all possible efforts to prevent new murders.

More cohabitation and fewer support networks during the summer
The concentration of crimes during holidays appears recurrently in the records. July is historically the month with the most women murdered since 2003, and June ranks second. Experts in gender violence relate this risk to a greater cohabitation within the home, changes in routines, and the temporary weakening of usual networks such as work, educational centers, or health services.
The Crisis Committee, convened this Tuesday by Equality, analyzed nine murders committed between June and July. Seven of those women lived with their aggressors, and only one had previously reported. The body has proposed maintaining protection when a victim withdraws the complaint or waives a restraining order, as fear and economic, emotional, or family dependence can condition that decision.
It also proposes reviewing the conformity agreements reached with aggressors, increasing vigilance in separation processes, and reinforcing psychological and institutional support for orphaned minors. Andalusia accounts for nine of the 32 women murdered this year, five of them in the province of Malaga, and will be the subject of a specific upcoming meeting between the Ministry and the Junta.
