The court of the Audiencia Nacional has summoned this Monday the former president of the Generalitat, Jordi Pujol, to subject him to a key medical examination. The decision will determine if he is in a condition to testify in the trial in which he is being investigated for alleged illicit enrichment, in a case that also affects several members of his family.

The appearance is set for 9:30 a.m. at the judicial headquarters of San Fernando de Henares (Madrid), where a forensic doctor will evaluate his state of health. According to the judicial order, the former Catalan leader must attend personally and may provide additional medical documentation that supports his current clinical situation.

This new examination occurs after what happened on November 24, 2025, when at the start of the trial the forensic experts already concluded that Jordi Pujol “was not in a condition” to fully participate in the process. At that moment, the court allowed him to follow the sessions from his home in Barcelona, due to his delicate state of health.

Medical reports indicate that the former president suffers from a major neurocognitive disorder of mixed character, with components of Alzheimer's and vascular deterioration. His personal doctor, Jaume Padrós, has recently reiterated that his condition is degenerative and progressive, and has described as “very cruel” forcing him to attend the trial in person under these circumstances.

In parallel to the medical situation, the judicial process continues to advance. Starting at 10:00 hours this same Monday, the statements of the rest of the accused are scheduled, among them his seven children: Jordi, Josep, Pere, Oleguer, Oriol, Marta and Mireia Pujol. The court has also arranged for the presence of a Catalan interpreter for several key days of the trial.

The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office requests for Jordi Pujol a nine-year prison sentence and a fine of 204,000 euros. Furthermore, it demands sentences ranging between 8 and 29 years in prison for his children, whom it considers part of an alleged criminal organization that would have operated for decades taking advantage of his political position.

The origin of the case dates back to 2014, when Jordi Pujol himself publicly acknowledged that he kept money abroad. At that time, he attributed those funds to an inheritance from his father, Florenci Pujol, claiming that he decided to keep them outside of Spain for fear of past political instability. Now, more than a decade later, justice is trying to clarify whether that patrimony has a licit origin or is part of a corruption scheme.
