The Public Prosecutor's Office has requested the acquittal of Begoña Gómez at the end of the controversial investigation by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado against the wife of President Pedro Sánchez. This follows alleged irregularities in the chair she co-directed at the Complutense University.
Peinado alleges extraordinary chairs without economic benefit for Gómez
The prosecutor's office has confirmed that there are no indications of a crime against Begoña Gómez, nor against her assistant Cristina Álvarez. The document alleges that the wife of the President of the Government began working at the Complutense University in 2012, long before Pedro Sánchez took office. Furthermore, it points out that since then Gómez has received 40,000 euros for her academic activities, but that none of these remunerations correspond to her activity in the training that has been investigated.
According to the prosecutor, the purpose of these extraordinary chairs is to attract private funds to the university, and adds that their direction is not subject to any academic qualification requirement: "The university has signed numerous agreements for the creation of extraordinary chairs, without requiring accreditation of titles or curriculum vitae of any kind, with entities, associations, companies and groups of very heterogeneous types and on very varied topics, and with entities, associations or people of very diverse condition and origin".
He also pointed out that none of the sponsoring or collaborating companies obtained any type of monetary income for their participation. "None of those investigated has benefited economically from these activities, nor is there any record that the Complutense University has suffered patrimonial damage as a result of the activities carried out," Peinado added.
The case of advisor Cristina Álvarez
Regarding the functions of Cristina Álvarez, the prosecutor defends that, as trusted personnel in charge of assisting and managing the agenda of the president's wife, her actions or accompaniments to Begoña Gómez in university matters fall within that relationship of trust, ruling out at all times that there was any harm or detriment to her work. The institution demands 108,000 euros in case of conviction.
