The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has launched his party's electoral machinery with the aim of having the organization fully prepared for future general elections. Within this strategy, the party plans to proclaim the candidates for the mayoralties of the provincial capitals on July 18, while the election of candidates for the autonomous presidencies will be addressed after the summer.
In the PP, they consider it necessary to advance preparations and have a government alternative ready, even though the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, maintains that general elections will be held in 2027. Thus, the PP's strategy also involves reinforcing the role of mayors and territorial leaders, considered key pieces to mobilize the electorate. This line includes various meetings recently held by the party, among them the forum of provincial councils, island councils, and regional councils held in Castellón, as well as meetings with autonomous representatives to coordinate political action for the upcoming elections.
Furthermore, former Prime Minister José María Aznar has supported the need to build a "national" and "centered" majority to promote political change in Spain. Meanwhile, the popular leadership assures that they will dedicate the coming months to intensifying pressure on the Executive, which they accuse of going through a period of wear marked by the lack of budgets and the political controversies affecting the Government.
Óscar López accuses Feijóo of delegitimizing the rule of law
The Minister for Digital Transformation, Óscar López, on Saturday criticized the Popular Party during an event held in Almagro (Ciudad Real), in response to the criticisms launched by Alberto Núñez Feijóo's party regarding the Grandchildren Law and the theory that the 'popular' and the far-right Vox have promoted about a possible 'rigging'.
According to the socialist leader, the PP's accusations against the Executive are part of a line of action that has already been seen in previous electoral processes. "Conspiracy theories are back. The PP already fueled doubts about postal voting," he reproached.
The controversy has intensified in recent days after the popular party accused the Government of "manufacturing voters" through this regulation. In response, López has defended the solidity of the Spanish democratic system and has criticized the opposition's attitude.
"What I believe is that Mr. Feijóo is putting the bandage on before the wound. He is already talking about his next electoral defeat," said López, who called it "intolerable that a governing party like the PP is delegitimizing the rule of law and the Spanish electoral system."
