The president of the Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has entrusted the general secretary of the formation, Miguel Tellado, with the direction of the electoral campaign for the general elections on November 29, according to popular sources.
The same sources emphasize that Tellado "has a successful track record leading Feijóo's campaign strategies" and that, on this occasion, he takes on the challenge of coordinating "the most important of them all". In the PP, they recall that he already successfully directed Alberto Núñez Feijóo's last two campaigns in Galicia, "achieving in both cases to improve the result of the previous electoral process and conquer the Presidency of the autonomous government".
The deputy direction of the campaign will fall to Marta Varela, Feijóo's Cabinet director, while the spokesperson for the Popular Group in Congress, Ester Muñoz, will act as campaign spokesperson for the PP. In addition, the deputy secretary of Sectoral Coordination, Alma Ezcurra, will be responsible for drafting the electoral program.
Sources from the PP have highlighted that, with these appointments, Feijóo "thus consolidates two young women, but above all two of his most solid leaders in the development of their respective functions".
The National Executive Committee, called to mobilize more than 300 officials
Feijóo will transfer these appointments to the party at the meeting of the National Executive Committee he has called for this Thursday in Madrid, with the aim of greasing the electoral machinery and mobilizing PP officials.
The National Executive Committee of the PP, the party's highest body between congresses, brings together more than 300 officials, including territorial barons, members of the steering committee, deputies, senators, and another thirty members elected by Feijóo at the last congress.
The leader of the PP and candidate for the Presidency of the Government already stated at the meeting held ten days ago that the party cannot relax. He then asked the popular leadership to "work every day, fight for every vote, earn the trust of a majority of Spaniards and demonstrate that we deserve it".
He also warned his team that "we cannot be overconfident" and urged the PP's top brass to give "everything" in the elections. Last week he insisted on the same idea by stating that they have "a great opportunity" ahead of them, that they are "better prepared" and that "there is a majority that wants a change", but without taking "anything for granted".
A pre-campaign agenda with events in Ceuta and Ifema Madrid
The PP is preparing an intense electoral agenda for Feijóo, with trips throughout the country and a wide presence in the autonomous communities, according to sources from the formation. The objective is for the candidate to "travel many kilometers" and take the party's message to every corner of Spain.
This Wednesday, Feijóo held his first pre-campaign event in Ceuta, where he supported the city's president, Juan Jesús Vivas, for his management of the crisis derived from the massive entry of immigrants at the end of July. In addition, this Saturday he will participate in an event at Ifema Madrid alongside the regional president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida.
The PP and UPN explore an electoral coalition
While the campaign design is being completed, the PP and Unión del Pueblo Navarro (UPN) have opened contacts to study a possible electoral coalition in the general elections on November 29, a formula they already used in the past, although in the 2023 elections they failed to reach an agreement.
The president of UPN, Cristina Ibarrola, has indicated that her party's will is to reach "an agreement that is good for Navarra and for Navarrese people", and has recalled that both parties have run together in many general elections. Ibarrola has also warned that "we have few days", since the deadline to present coalitions ends on October 16.
For his part, the president of the PP of Navarra's interim committee, Sergio Sayas, has stated that his party is "willing to run in the elections with UPN" and that they will do "everything in our power to make that pact happen".
Possible postponement of party congresses
The election call has also altered the PP's internal calendar. The National Executive Committee held on September 28 gave the green light to about twenty regional and provincial congresses that were to be held between late October and November, but the early elections have led the party to consider their postponement.
The PP believes that it must concentrate all its efforts on the general elections, and the PP of Madrid has already announced the delay of its conclave, which was scheduled for the same day of the vote.
