The leader of the Popular Party (PP) and candidate for the Presidency of the Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, warned this Wednesday the head of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, that in Spain there could also be a “political upheaval” in the elections on November 29, like the one that, he stressed, has occurred in the United States, where Americans “have withdrawn confidence” from President Donald Trump.
In an interview on Antena 3, Feijóo maintained that the result of the US midterms should serve as a warning for the President of the Government, whom he recommended to “take note” of what happened at the US polls.
Feijóo gives the example of the United States
“Mr. Trump has lost the elections. Americans have withdrawn their confidence in him in Congress and the Senate. The American people know what they have to do and they have done it,” declared Alberto Núñez Feijóo during the interview, in which he linked the Republican electoral setback with the Spanish political scenario.
Democrats have achieved total control of both chambers, the Senate and the House of Representatives, in a severe blow to Donald Trump in the midterm elections. Feijóo interpreted this result as a response from voters to the US president's economic policies, especially after the rise in fuel prices, while Trump attributed the defeat to the absence of his name on the ballots.
After Pedro Sánchez celebrated the Democratic victory in the United States and indicated that it anticipates his triumph in the general elections, the president of the PP affirmed that “the polls have been right in the United States” and that Trump “has had a very important setback in both chambers.”
“Democrats have risen even in traditional Republican strongholds and therefore they should take note because if the American polls have been right and the Spanish ones are also right, then on November 29 there will be a political upheaval in Spain that in this case will affect the President of the Government,” warned the popular leader.
Criticism of foreign policy and the impact of inflation
The president of the Popular Party insisted that he defends “the interests” of Spain and added that, in terms of foreign policy, he “will not engage in partisan politics, much less politics of personal interest.” “My foreign policy model has nothing to do with Mr. Sánchez's,” he stressed.
Asked about the possibility that, if he governs, he will have to face the inflationary consequences derived from the Iran war, Feijóo pointed out that it is “evident that geopolitical problems are part of the economic impacts that can occur at the national level,” so, he said, his team is counting on that scenario.
“That is why we have been saying for some time that the Government cannot profit from inflation,” he emphasized, while accusing Pedro Sánchez's Executive of “profiting from inflation for many years.”
In that context, he assured that, before the Iran war, when inflation already affected food or housing, the Government “did not update the income tax rate with inflation.” “And the result is that we have less purchasing power, that we have greater child poverty, more than Romania and Bulgaria. And the problem is that workers cannot make ends meet,” he concluded.
