Holy Week 2026 once again reflects differences in the working calendar according to the autonomous community, especially with regard to Maundy Thursday and Easter Monday, which determines where there will be a long weekend.
Holy Thursday will be a holiday in most of the country, with the exception of Catalonia and Valencian Community, where it does not appear as a non-working day as it is a holiday that can be substituted by autonomous community decision.
Good Friday will indeed be a holiday throughout Spain without exceptions, as it is a non-substitutable national holiday, so all workers will have that day off.
For its part, Easter Monday, April 6, will be a holiday only in six territories: Catalonia, Valencian Community, Castilla-La Mancha, Basque Country, Navarre and La Rioja.
In the school environment, the calendar is similar in most communities, although with exceptions: in Andalusia, Asturias, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castile and Leon, Ceuta, Extremadura and Melilla Monday, April 6 will be a school day.
After Holy Week, the next national holiday will be May 1, Labor Day, although some communities like Aragon and Castile and Leon celebrate April 23 earlier as a regional holiday.
In Spain, the general framework establishes 14 holidays per year, according to the Workers' Statute: nine national, three regional and two local. These days are paid and non-recoverable rest days, although there are exceptions in certain sectors. Activities such as hospitality, transport, healthcare or security may require work on holidays, which is compensated with additional remuneration or with days off, according to what is established in labor agreements.
