The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that the Council of Ministers will approve this Tuesday a royal decree aimed at increasing the financing of the dependency system with an additional 2,218 million euros in 2026. With this measure, the state contribution will exceed, according to the Executive, 7,200 million euros next year.
The announcement was made during an event at the Imserso focused on dependency and disability, in which he participated alongside the Minister of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, Pablo Bustinduy. The budgetary reinforcement is part of an expansion of 6,200 million euros between 2026 and 2027 compared to the current accounts of 2023.
The plan contemplates that the General State Administration will finance 50% of the dependency system “until exceeding 7,000 million euros in 2027”, with the aim of reinforcing coverage and improving care for dependent people.
Sánchez has defended that the initiative seeks to “reduce waiting lists, guarantee more and greater care, and dignify those who care”, in a context in which the Executive intends to consolidate the social care system.
During his speech, the president stressed that this is a step to “consolidate a system that leaves no one behind when they most need the support of society [...] The Government wants to continue despite the difficulties, we continue to improve people's lives”.
The announced reform implies a structural modification of the financing model, as it increases transfers to autonomous communities based on the recognized degree of dependency and plans to double the amounts allocated to people who require higher levels of support.
