Today we learned about the sentence in the Masks case, handed down by the Supreme Court. The ruling imposes 24 years in prison for Ábalos, almost 20 years for Koldo García, the former minister's ex-advisor, and four years for businessman Víctor de Aldama.

Of course, the sentences are debatable. It is legitimate to ask whether it makes sense for Ábalos to be sentenced to 24 years, Koldo García to almost 20, and Víctor de Aldama, considered the corrupting link in the plot, to receive only four years. Even more so when Aldama partially collaborated with justice, but made accusations against numerous people without providing evidence or documentation to support them. That difference in sentences can be a subject of debate.

However, there is something that is beyond dispute: this sentence represents a new wear and tear for Pedro Sánchez. It is also indisputable that a resolution adopted unanimously by the seven magistrates of the Supreme Court affects the morale of many socialist militants and sympathizers.

But there is another equally unquestionable issue because it responds to the facts. There is not a single piece of evidence pointing to Pedro Sánchez as the number one in the plot. Nor is there evidence that the Prime Minister knew about the activities carried out by Ábalos, Koldo García, or Aldama. There is no evidentiary element that places Sánchez at the apex of the plot, as the Popular Party and Vox systematically try to convey.

Without going any further, this very morning Feijóo stated: "It is not reasonable to have a Prime Minister surrounded by corruption and under suspicion. And now with two final sentences from the Supreme Court."

What the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, intends is to place Pedro Sánchez at the center of the plot, to make him its maximum political and moral responsible. And in case it wasn't clear enough, just a few days ago Miguel Tellado, number two of the PP, went even further by stating: "Pedro Sánchez and his gang have very little time left to continue stealing." What is the need to do this?

The reality is already serious enough on its own. The plot articulated by Ábalos —and we are no longer talking about presumptions, because there is a judicial conviction— was organized by a person who held positions of enormous institutional and organic relevance: Minister of the Government and Secretary of Organization of the PSOE, one of the most important positions in the party.

The use of public structures and resources to favor this plot constitutes an extremely serious act. An ugly and damaging reality for the Socialist Party. And it also cannot be ignored that the Government tried to distance itself from Ábalos: first he was removed from the Ministry and subsequently expelled from the PSOE.

The reality, therefore, is already sufficiently harsh. Why invent more? Why place the President of the Government at the apex of the plot when there is not a single piece of evidence to support it? There is no evidence, Mr. Feijóo. There is no evidence, Mr. Tellado, that Sánchez was the number one in this plot.

And yet, reality already punishes the Socialist Party without the need for exaggerations, distortions, or falsehoods. Why fall into them?

What image does the main opposition party project, a Popular Party that, by the way, won the last general elections but did not achieve the necessary majority to invest Alberto Núñez Feijóo as President of the Government? What need does the PP have to distort the facts when reality is already sufficiently forceful?

And I'm not even talking about Vox. Vox goes even further. Its discourse presents Pedro Sánchez as a dictator who intends to remain illegitimately in power. It is such a disproportionate accusation that it almost does not deserve comment. We are talking about a far-right formation that, by the way, maintains increasingly frequent agreements with the Popular Party.

That is why I end with the same question with which I began this analysis: What need do the PP and Vox, Feijóo and Abascal, have to sugarcoat or invent reality? What need is there?
