The general secretary of the PP, Miguel Tellado, brought his call to concentrate the vote around Alberto Núñez Feijóo to San Sebastián this Tuesday to achieve a change of Government in the general elections on November 29. During a pre-campaign event, the popular leader assured that with Pedro Sánchez "nothing works in Spain anymore" and defended that the time has come to "really change things."

Tellado shared the stage with the president of the Basque PP, Javier de Andrés, and with the party's candidate for Congress for Gipuzkoa, Jon Echeverría. The popular party aspires to regain representation in a constituency that distributes six deputies and where they were left without a seat in the 2023 general elections.

In his speech, the number two of the PP directed much of his criticism at the President of the Government and the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, for the Urda railway accident in Toledo. He also criticized the PNV and EH Bildu for their parliamentary relationship with the Sánchez Executive.

The PP seeks a seat in Gipuzkoa

Tellado presented the November 29 election as an opportunity to replace the current president and asked attendees to support the popular candidacy. He argued that voting for the PSOE, the PNV, or EH Bildu would serve to keep Sánchez in La Moncloa.

"There is only one ballot to choose a different President of the Government, and that is the ballot of the Popular Party," he stated. This is the electoral argument with which the popular party seeks to attract support in the province and present its candidacy as the alternative to the bloc that supported Sánchez's investiture.

The PNV and EH Bildu are formations with their own projects that supported the president's investiture in 2023 and whose votes have been important in Congress during the legislature. Tellado's statement is part of the PP's campaign to dispute their representation; the election results and subsequent negotiations will determine the support for a future investiture.

In Gipuzkoa, six deputies are elected. In 2023, EH Bildu, the PSE-EE, and the PNV each obtained two. The PP secured 32,721 votes, 8.69% of the valid votes, and was left without representation in the province.

Projections show that the seat the popular party is pursuing remains an open dispute. The central scenario of the Electoral Map model updated to November 3 attributes three deputies to EH Bildu, two to the PSE-EE, and one to the PNV, although it includes the possibility of the PP obtaining one.

The accident in Urda focuses criticism on the Government

The train accident in Urda, which occurred on October 28 and left 69 dead, has occupied a prominent part of Tellado's speech. The popular leader also recalled the tragedy of Adamuz, in Córdoba, in January, in which 46 people died.

Tellado questioned Puente's appearance this Tuesday before the Permanent Deputation of Congress "to cling to his position" and considered that the minister should have gone to resign. He also held Sánchez politically responsible for keeping him in charge of Transport.

Puente has defended his continuity and assured that his way of assuming responsibilities is to give explanations and work to improve railway safety. The Government has announced a reinforcement plan and aid for the victims of Urda, while the judicial and technical investigations remain open to clarify the causes of the accident.

In San Sebastián, Tellado grouped the railway tragedies with the blackout and the migratory crisis in Ceuta to argue that there is a "pattern of conduct" by the Executive. This is the political assessment of the popular leader on events of different natures, whose circumstances and responsibilities must be examined separately.

The general secretary of the PP has also accused Sánchez of having spent years "blaming everyone else for all of Spain's problems" and has promised that a Feijóo government would bring "order" to public services, institutions, borders, and streets. Closing his speech, he asked his supporters to take advantage of the elections to "change things and change them for real."
